Method #1 – Check your Chromebook Keyboard for Physical Damage or Issues

Are there dirty keys on your keyboard? Sometimes, there are things stuck in between your keyboard that may cause it to malfunction. You can try to clean your keys by dabbing some rubbing alcohol on them. Do it carefully and make sure it is not soaking wet. You can use a cotton swab to clean your keyboard.

Method #2 – Try Using an External Keyboard

If you have an external keyboard lying around, you can try to plug it in and use it in place of your built-in Chromebook keyboard. It may not instantly solve the problem, but it can be a quick fix if you need to use your keyboard immediately.

Method #3 – Power Cycle your Chromebook & Router Devices

  • Turn off your Chromebook laptop and unplug your modem and router.
  • Wait for at least 3 minutes before plugging them back in and connecting to the Internet.
  • Now, restart your Chromebook and check if your keyboard is working.

Method #4 – Do a Hardware Reset or EC Reset on your Chromebook

By performing a Hardware or EC Reset, you will effectively remove and reset the trickle charge that keeps the embedded controller (EC) running on your Chromebook device.

  • Shut down your Chromebook using the Shutdown option.
  • Look for the Refresh and Power keys. Press and hold them both at the same time for about 10 seconds.
  • Release the Refresh key first.
  • Release the Power key next.

Method #5 – Powerwash your Chromebook

Note that to Powerwash your Chromebook will reset it to its default settings. It is advisable and recommended to perform a backup first of all your files before doing the Powerwash. 

  • First, sign out of your Chromebook account.
  • On your keyboard, press the keys Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r. Hold them until a menu appears.
  • Click Restart.
  • Select Powerwash.
  • Click Continue.
  • Follow the instructions. 
  • Sign in to your Google account and set up your Chromebook.
