How to Troubleshoot & Resolve Photoshop Keeps Freezing, Lagging, Crashing on Windows 10/11 Computer

Below are some methods that will help you fix the error that causes Adobe Photoshop to keep crashing when opening on your Windows 10/11 PC.

Try to follow each of the steps one at a time and check if the issue still exists or not. However, you can try to restart your computer first and see if it resolves the problem. If the error does not stop, proceed to the methods below.

Methods #1 – Perform an SFC Scan

  • On the Search box, enter cmd.
  • Right-click Command Prompt and run it as administrator.
  • Enter the following command: SFC/scannow.
  • Wait for the process to finish and restart your computer.

Method #2 – Turn Off Use of Graphic Processor

  • Launch the Photoshop app.
  • Go to the menu bar and click the Edit tab.
  • Select Preferences.
  • Choose Performance.
  • Navigate to the Graphics Processor Settings.
  • Look for the Use Graphics Professor option and uncheck the box next to it.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Restart the app.

Method #3 – Reset Preferences on your Photoshop App

  • Open the Photoshop app.
  • Click Edit.
  • Select Preferences.
  • Go to General.
  • Click Reset Preferences on Quit.
  • Click OK.
  • Restart the app.

Method #4 – Update the Photoshop App

  • On your Adobe Photoshop app, navigate to the Help section.
  • Select Updates.
  • Check if there are available updates and install them.
  • Restart the Photoshop app.

Method #5 – Update your Graphics Driver

  • Open the Run dialog box and enter the following command: devmgmt.msc.
  • Look for Display Adapter and expand the menu.
  • Right-click on your graphics driver.
  • Select Update Driver.
  • Click Search automatically for the drivers.
  • Restart your computer after the installation process.

Method #6 – Increase the Memory Allocation in your Photoshop

  • On the Photoshop app, select Edit.
  • Go to Preferences.
  • Choose Performance.
  • Navigate to the Memory Usage section.
  • Increase the percentage amount to 80% by clicking the plus sign.
  • Click OK.
