Updating the BIOS and firmware are crucial but can be a risky job. There are warnings prior to making such an update to remind users of the possible problems that may arise. In most instances, crashing and bricked systems happen if the update process is not handled with care.
Unfortunately, a BIOS update from HP has led to a huge problem for many users. Bricked issues on their HP ProBooks have been reported in forums, showing black screens and ramp up fans on their devices. Most affected devices became unstable after the update.

Unfortunately for HP ProBooks seventh generation laptops, warranty is no longer applicable with these models released in 2020. These devices may include HP ProBook 445 G7, HP EliteBook 845 G7, HP ProBook x360 435 G7, HP EliteBook 855 G7, HP ProBook 455 G7 and HP EliteBook 835 G7. The firmware version causing the error is 01.17, which made its way via HP’s Support Assistant or Windows Update.
This may not be great news to users, especially with the cost of repair outside of warranty. One user forum said that the price of replacing the motherboard is €400. The AMD-powered HP ProBooks computer is priced at $1,000 when released in 2020.
HP continues to investigate the issue. Affected users can either wait for HP’s solution on the issue or contact HP customer support. HP also advised users not to update their computers until further notice.
