Were you affected by the Microsoft 365 app crash on Windows Server 2016? Good news is Microsoft released a workaround that will enable you to fix the issue.

Many users reported that their Microsoft 365 apps begin to crash after installing Version 2412 (Build 18324.20168) or Version 2412 (Build 18324.20190) update. This is also widely seen in the Classic Outlook.

To help you troubleshoot the crashing issue on Windows Server 2016, you will need to revert to Version 2411 (Build 18227.20152). Here’s how you can do it:

On the Search bar, type Command Prompt or cmd and select Command Prompt. Click Run as administrator. First, type the following command and press Enter: cd %programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun. Next, type this command and press Enter: officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.18227.20152.

Make sure that you turn off the updates to prevent Microsoft Office from automatically updating the new and problematic version. To do so, select File. Go to the Office Account and head over to Update Options. Select Disable Updates.

Microsoft will look into the update issue and encourage their users to allow version updates once they address the problem.
