Whenever you login to any of Microsoft’s services, it will send a notification on your Outlook app. You will immediately receive the prompt where you can see the verification number with the biometric or PIN.

Yes, it works similarly with Microsoft Authenticator hence you have an option to use the Outlook app or the Authenticator itself. However, Microsoft is providing an alternative to users who haven’t installed the Authenticator app on their mobile phones yet.
