Do your speakers continue to play despite plugging in your headphones? It may sound weird considering that there must be a single audio output when using your computer. But, the PC audio output switching mute problem can still happen to many users due to different factors.

One of the reasons why you experience conflicting errors with your Windows 10 or 11 PC sound devices is a problem with your internal speakers or headphones and earphones. There may be underlying issues with one of these devices when you switch your output source, so the sound is not muted and continues to come and play on both audio outputs at the same time.

How to Stop Sound Still Coming from Speakers When Headphones are Plugged in or Connected on Windows 10/11 PC

Below are several ways on how to address the speaker issues on your PC and fix the speaker that won’t turn off even after you connect or plug your headphone device. Try to follow them one at a time and check if it works in getting the sound back from playing through your speakers to your headphones or not.

Solution #1 – Check your Devices

See if there are loose connections on your speakers and headphones. You can also check if there is dust or dirt on the hardware jacks and clean them out. Check the wires for broken or damaged areas.

Plug in your Headphones on Another Device

You can verify if the problem is with your headphones. Try to switch and connect it to another PC or your mobile device and see if it works. If it does, the problem may not be with your headphones and might be coming from your built-in system speakers.

Solution #2 – Run the Audio Troubleshooter

  • Open the Settings menu.
  • Select Update & Security.
  • Choose Troubleshoot.
  • Select Additional Troubleshooters.
  • Choose Playing Audio.
  • Click Next.
  • Wait for Windows to perform a scan and repair the audio issue.

Solution #3 – Make your Headphones as Default Audio

  • Launch the Sounds Setting of your PC. You can use the Search button or click the Sounds icon at the bottom right corner.
  • Navigate to the Playback tab.
  • Highlight your headphones and right-click on them.
  • Select Set as Default Device.

Solution #4 – Try to Enable your Sound Card Again

  • Launch the Device Manager of your computer.
  • Navigate to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
  • Expand the menu.
  • Look for your Sound Card and right-click on it.
  • Select Disable Device.
  • Now, reboot your PC.
  • Go back again to Device Manager.
  • Head over to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
  • Right-click on your Sound Card Driver and select Enable Device.

Solution #5 – Install Available Updates on your Sound Card

  • Open the Device Manager of your PC.
  • Go to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and expand the menu.
  • Select your Sound Card Driver and right-click on it.
  • Select Update Driver Software.
