The Remote Desktop app has been an efficient tool for users who often need to connect their devices to a Windows PC from a far distance. Remote connection has its perks including efficient access to files, remote work and even better collaboration. While the app itself is working, Microsoft is bringing in an improvement. In comes the Windows App – a new replacement for the Remote Desktop app.

According to Microsoft, only the Remote Desktop app will be discontinued. You can still use the built-in Remote Desktop Services. The Windows app will be available on Android, iOS, macOS and the web. It will immediately replace the Remote Desktop app on Microsoft Store on May 27, 2025.
The Windows app will be offering several enhancements such as a redesigned user interface, unified access to several Windows services, dynamic display resolution, multi monitor support, Chrome OS support for Android, modern security and authentication and passkey support.
Microsoft advised its users to transition to the Windows app prior to the discontinued date for them to continue using Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Dev Box.
