One of the best ways to store your photos online is to use a cloud-based storage app such as Google Photos. You can easily save all your mobile or desktop images and even share them with anyone you want. Google Photos is convenient and easy to access. You can view your photos on any device with your Google account logged in on it.

Unfortunately, many users encounter a problem when they access Google Photos on a new device or another account. It is pretty normal for the app to set up your photo library, but getting stuck on the same page for hours is no longer a standard delay. Mobile users on iOS and Android devices seem to get stuck on the setup page with the message, “Setting up your photo library” for many hours.

How to Troubleshoot & Resolve the Google Photos Issue Stuck on “Setting Up Your Photo Library”

It is frustrating to see an error when you want to access and manage your files online. But, you can try to resolve the stuck on “Setting up your photo library” issue on the Google Photos app for Android or iOS devices by following the methods below.

Method #1 – Restart your Phone or Tablet

  • Exit the Google Photos app on your mobile device and close all running apps in the background.
  • Power off your device and wait for a few minutes.
  • Turn on your device and relaunch the Google Photos app.

Method #2 – Try to Power Cycle your Devices

If a restart on your device does not work, you may perform a power cycle. Sometimes, the issue is with your network connection. First, turn off your device and unplug your router and modem. Wait for at least 3 minutes. Plug your router and modem back in and connect to the Internet. Turn on your device and relaunch Google Photos.

Method #3 – Update your Google Photos App

  • Navigate to Google Play Store.
  • Tap your profile icon.
  • Go to Manage your apps & device.
  • Look for Google Photos and tap the Update button. You may also choose to Update All the apps.
  • Relaunch Google Photos and check if the problem is still there.

Method #4 – Clear Cache on your Google Photos App

  • Launch the Settings menu of your device.
  • Go to Apps.
  • Look for Google Photos. If you cannot find it, tap See all apps.
  • Select Google Photos.
  • Go to Storage.
  • Tap Clear Cache.
  • Tap Clear Data.

Method #5 – Delete Zero-Byte Files

To do this method, you need to install a terminal app on your Android phone or tablet. You can download Termux for free.

  • First, set up permissions for Termux.
  • Launch the Settings menu of your device.
  • Go to Apps and select Termux.
  • Navigate to Permissions.
  • Allow Files and media.
  • Launch the Termux app.
  • Enter the following command: cd /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/.
  • Next, enter the following command: find . -type f -size 0 -name “*.*” -delete.
  • Then, clear the cache on your Google Photos app.
  • Lastly, reboot your device.

Method #6 – Turn Off Face Grouping Tool

  • Open Google Photos.
  • Tap your profile icon.
  • Choose Photo Settings.
  • Select Group Similar Faces.
  • Look for Face Grouping and disable it.
