One of the things you need to do to keep your Windows 10 or 11 PC working efficiently is to install the latest software updates. Windows updates include software upgrades to improve the performance of your laptop or desktop computer and keep it more secured. These updates from Microsoft also have fixes for bugs and errors reported from previous software versions.
Unfortunately, not all Windows updates work out seamlessly. There are instances when you may encounter a problem that prevents you from installing these software updates to your PC. One of these issues is the failed Windows update error code 0x800f0801.
The error message says: “There were problems installing some updates, but we’ll try again later. Feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2 – Error 0x800f0801”
Fixing Update Error Code 0x800f0801 in Windows 10 or 11 Computer
The error code 0x800f0801 prevents the update files from being installed on your PC. That means you can’t download the software version you need for your Windows computer. You can try to troubleshoot the issue that caused the failed update installation by following the solutions below.
Solution #1 – Perform an SFC
- Click the Start button and navigate to the Search box.
- Enter cmd.
- Look for Command Prompt on the search results and right-click on it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter the following command: sfc /scannow.
- Restart your computer.
Solution #2 – Run a DISM Scan
- Launch the Command Prompt and run it as administrator.
- Enter the following command: DISM /online /Cleanup-Image / ScanHealth.
- Now, enter the following command: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
- Restart your computer.
Solution #3 – Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Launch the Settings menu of your Windows PC.
- Go to System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Choose Other troubleshooters.
- Look for Windows Update.
- Click the Run button next to it.
- Follow the instructions on how to fix the error.
Solution #4 – Edit the Group Policy
- Open the Search bar and enter gpedit.msc to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Go to Computer Configuration.
- Select Administrative Templates.
- Click System.
- Look for Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair and double click it.
- Set it to Enabled.
- Click OK.
Solution #5 – Enable .NET Framework 3.5
- Open the Run Dialog Box. You can press the Windows key + R simultaneously.
- Enter the following command: appwiz.cpl.
- Click Turn Windows features on or off.
- Look for the .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and click the box next to it.
- Click OK.
Solution #6 – Manually Check Windows Update
- Launch the Settings menu of your Windows PC.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for Updates.
- If there are available updates, click Install Now.
