A username is our identity in social media, forums, or other websites. We use it for other members to know us and associate our responses and activities with our username. It is also easier for other people to find us and send us a direct message.

When you sign up for an account on Facebook, you will need to create a unique username as your identity. However, there are cases when some people encounter the “You are not eligible to create a username” error on Facebook.

This error happens when you try to create a username for your page on Facebook. If this issue happens to you, it is difficult to completely set up your page on Facebook. You will also get stuck with the generic URL that Facebook assigns to your page without having to choose and use your own unique URL with your username in it.

Why Does Facebook Say I am Not Eligible to Create a Username?

There are different reasons why you are facing the not eligible to create a username error for your Facebook page.

  1. The username you want has already been taken by another user.
  2. Your username is either too short or too long. It must be at least 5 characters long and a maximum of 5 characters.
  3. It must contain alphanumeric characters.
  4. If you need to create a username for your Facebook page, it should have at least 25-page likes.
  5. For usernames on your Facebook page, you must be a page admin to create one.

  1. I first get get to see a green checkmark that the username is available and after that I get the following error messages in dutch:

    – The username is not available and cannot be created.

    – An error has occurred. We are committed to resolving this issue as soon as possible.

I tried several names but I get the same error messages. I have to say that I don’t have 25 likes but some people on the interrnet say that Facebook has reduced it to 0? Can you or someone else clarify this? Other tips to solve my problem are of course also welcome. 🙂

  2. 2. “It must be at least 5 characters long and a maximum of 5 characters.” – typo here, what is the correct upper limit please?

p.s. your form doesn’t accept emails with uncommon gTLDs (.travel in my case).

  3. It still won’t let me create a Username. The Create button is greyed out. As far as I can tell, I have met all the requirements. How old does it have to be for us to be able to do this? I know it said something about not being too recent.

  4. I’ve done everything on the check list and it still won’t allow me to create a username. The page already has 150+ likes and I even added an additional admin as suggested by another article.

  5. It’s 2023 and these instructions don’t work, but what’s more frustrating is the author of this article leaves it open for comments, but doesn’t bother to reply to a single one! Close it down already!
