Apple’s latest wireless earbuds in the AirPod family – the AirPods Pro 2 – arrive in the hands of consumers with a newly implemented touch control system that adds the ability for users to use touch gestures feature to manipulate the audio content resonating out of the devices.

The various ways that a user can manipulate media consumption, for instance, music output via Spotify or Apple Music, ranging from being able to play or pause audio in a simple tapping motion on the main stem of the AirPod, skipping songs, or even changing the output volume.

However, these newly introduced Touch gestures do not appeal to everyone – and Apple has clearly acknowledged this as seen via the implementation of options and settings corresponding to the gestures in the Settings app within your Apple device that are compatible with AirPods, such as iPhones and iPads running iOS and iPad OS.

Touch gestures can oftentimes be problematic, and owners of the popular premium Bluetooth wireless earbuds, specifically the AirPods Pro 2nd generation, can expect accidental gesture inputs as the AirPod stem itself that responds to touch input is sensitive and does not require a lot of force to activate the gesture. As such, sometimes you can accidentally touch the stem when you do something such as touching your hair or scratching your head – and this could cause you to accidentally skip your favourite song or podcast!

Therefore, if you are a person that dislikes the implementation of Touch gestures implemented with the AirPod’s, the following section of this article will cover how to disable the gestures in the Settings app of your Apple wireless earbuds device:

  1. The first step is to connect your AirPods Pro 2 to your Apple device that is compatible with AirPods – don’t worry, you will know if your device isn’t compatible as you won’t be able to connect. However, all iPhones and iPads released in the last ten years are compatible, so you should be fine – unless you are trying to connect your AirPods to a legacy iPod that still has a scroll wheel…
  2. Once you have connected your AirPods, navigate to the Settings app on your device by clicking the Settings icon on the home screen, wherever you have put it – that looks like a grey box with black cogs on it – or simply search for the Settings app in your devices Apps.
  3. Under the Apple ID banner at the top of your settings, you should see the AirPods Pro tab – simply click this tab to enter the AirPods Pro settings menu.
  4. Once inside, scroll down to the Accessibility tab, and in here you will be able select to ‘toggle off’ the ‘Volume Swipe’ gesture within the ‘Volume Control’ submenu of the Accessibility tab.

If you have followed these steps, you will have disabled or turned off the Touch gestures relating to Volume control, which can be the most problematic and finicky of the gestures Apple introduced with their latest AirPods Pro version 2. In these submenus, you will also gain access to disabling and reenabling any other gesture that you choose.
