Google Meet is a sophisticated platform for online meetings. It comes with a seamless interface and sleek modern design, and has only grown in popularity in recent years.

As a Google Meet user, there is a huge concern that can suddenly come up if the camera refuses to work in the first place. Some users reported that Google Meet has a green screen issue, while others see a black screen. Either way, the camera refuses to work, making it hard to actually carry out any presentations.

How-to-Troubleshoot-Google-Meet-Camera-Failed-or-Not-Working-Error

The problem is mainly caused by a camera that isn’t enabled, multiple cameras connected, poor internet connection, and even using an outdated version of the Google Meet application.

In this guide, we will help you figure out a solution to this uncomfortable issue.

How to Troubleshoot Google Meet Camera Failed or Not Working Error

Getting rid of this problem can be very easy if you can follow the steps as presented.

Method #1 – Restart your Computer or Smartphone

A simple restart can go a long way in saving you a lot of valuable time with troubleshooting. Restart your device and let it reconfigure itself, and hopefully get rid of your Google Meet issue at the same time.

Method #2 – Disable Hardware-accelerated Video Decode on Google Chrome Browser

A feature for camera-enabled tabs in Chrome, disabling this can help you successfully get rid of the green and black screen on Google Meet.

  • Open your browser and enter the following address in the primary address bar “chrome://flags.”
  • In the search bar for this new page, type in “Hardware-accelerated video decode” to view some new information.
  • Choose Disabled from the drop-down menu to the right.
  • Select Restart at the bottom right corner to restart the Chrome browser.

Method #3 – Ensure that your Windows or Mac Camera is Activated

This omission is one that happens fairly often when people attempt to video call. Here’s how to deal with it.

For Windows

  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.
  2. Navigate to Privacy and choose Camera.
  3. Select Change and move the slider to On.

For Mac

  1. Go to the Finder and open your Applications folder.
  2. Select an app that uses the iSight camera, like PhotoBooth or FaceTime.
  3. If the camera is working, it means that it is enabled.

Method #4 – Allow Access to Microphone or Camera on Google Chrome

It is entirely possible that you failed to enable the microphone and camera, while setting up Google Meet, leading to this issue. To fix it, do the following.

  • Go to the camera icon in your address bar.
  • Click on it and select Always allow.

This should help you fix the issue if it wasn’t enabled already.

Method #5 – Update Google Meet App on your Smartphone

If you’re an Android or iOS user, you are likely aware that Google Meet can be updated through the App Store or Play Store. Install the latest version and see if the issue persists.

Encountering a black or green screen is never ideal when you need to attend a meeting. With either of these fixes, you should be in a more comfortable position to sort out the problem.
