How to Fix Search Bar Not Working Problem on Windows 11 PC

A computer shortcut can make things a lot easier for you. It may not always be the best solution, but using a shortcut on Windows PC can sometimes lessen your time and effort when you are in a hurry. For instance, when you want to navigate to a tool or feature on your Windows 11 computer, you use the search bar instead of going through from one folder to another.

But, what if your search bar or search box is not working or you can’t type anything on it on your Windows 11 PC? If this problem happens, you can choose to do the long process to get to your destination folder or Windows app. Still, don’t settle for having a faulty or not running search service on your latest Windows 11 computer. This error happens to most users after performing a Windows update. You can fix the issue by following some of the troubleshooting methods we have listed below.

The Search bar not working is not a unique issue on the new Windows 11 OS. While Windows 11 is still in its beta phase, the Search bar problem also appears on older versions of Windows, prominently so on Windows 10. So, how do you troubleshoot and resolve the search feature error? Check out some of the solutions you can do below.

Solution #1 – Reboot your Windows 11 PC

A simple restart can do wonders in your Windows 11 system processes.

  • First, launch the Start button found in the middle of your taskbar.
  • At the bottom right corner, click the Power button.
  • Select Restart.
  • After rebooting, try using your search bar again.

Solution #2 – Run the Windows Troubleshooter

  • Launch the Settings menu.
  • On the left side, select System.
  • Go to the right panel and click Troubleshoot.
  • Click Other troubleshooter.
  • Look for Search and Indexing.
  • Click the Run button.

Solution #3 – Perform an SFC Scan

  • Open the Command Prompt with admin rights.
  • Enter sfc /scannow.
  • After scanning, restart your computer.

Solution #4 – Do a DISM Scan

  • Launch the Command Prompt and run it as administrator.
  • Enter DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth.
  • After the first scan, enter DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth.
  • Lastly, enter DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
  • Restart your Windows 11 PC.

Solution #5 – End Task Windows Search

  • Navigate to the Task Manager. If you don’t know how to open the Task Manager, press the keys Ctrl + Alt + Shift together.
  • Go to the Details tab.
  • Look for SearchUI.exe.
  • Right-click on the filename and select End task.
  • Click End Process.

Solution #6 – Update your Windows 11 PC

  • Open the Settings menu.
  • Select Windows Update on the left panel.
  • On the right side, click Check for updates.

Solution #7 – Disable and Enable Windows Search

  • Open the Taskbar by pressing together the keys Ctrl+Shift+ESC.
  • Go to the Services tab.
  • At the bottom, click Open Services.
  • Look for Windows Search and right-click on it.
  • Choose Properties.
  • Look for the Service Status option.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • Look for the Startup Type.
  • Choose Disabled.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.
  • Now, reboot your computer.
  • Again, go to the Taskbar and navigate to the Services tab.
  • Click Open Services and right-click Windows Search.
  • Select Properties.
  • Now, go to the Startup Type.
  • Select Automatic.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click OK.

Solution #8 – Reset your Windows 11 Computer

  • Launch the Settings menu.
  • On the left side, select System.
  • On the right, click Recovery.
  • Under Recovery Options, go to Reset this PC.
  • Click Reset PC.
