You may be wondering how you can install and run Microsoft Word on your Chromebook. Unlike other laptop computers, you cannot install desktop versions of Microsoft Office apps on your Chromebook device. Google is migrating to progressive web apps on ChromeOS. 

But, what if you need to edit or create a Microsoft Word document? What if someone sent you a Microsoft Word file with .doc extension, or you need to send a co-worker documents in MS Word format? 

Even with the different approach and processes on a Chromebook environment, you can still run, use, and open Microsoft Word files on Chromebooks. When it comes to installing the app, there are ways to bypass the traditional methods.

Fortunately, you can download and install the Microsoft Word Android app to your Chromebook laptop device for free via the Google Play Store. Chromebook supports Android apps, so it is still easy to work on the apps that you used to on other laptop computers.

  • Launch Google Play Store.
  • Look for Microsoft Word. 
  • Select the Microsoft Word app and make sure it is under Microsoft Corporation.
  • Click the Install button.
  • Select the Launcher on your laptop.
  • Click the Microsoft Word app to open it.

How to Run and Use Microsoft Word for Free on Chromebook

When you install the Microsoft Word Android app, you can launch the app to run it directly within the Chrome OS environment. However, if you don’t like to install the Android app, there are also other alternatives that you can do. You can always use the Microsoft Word online version through your Microsoft 365 account.

Office 365 gives you access to Microsoft Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more. You can subscribe to the paid plan for added storage, but there is also a free plan that you can use with only 5GB of storage.
