A lot of users find the Chromebook device an easy computer to use due to its simplicity and reliability. Unlike other types of laptop computers, a Chromebook runs on a different operating system built originally by Google. ChromeOS is web-based and came from the same build as the Chrome browser.

While Chromebooks offer efficient functions, there are also privacy risks similar to other laptops for work or personal use. To help you keep your activities and information private, one of the best ways to do this is to use a VPN service.

Virtual Private Network or VPN acts as an added layer of security where your data becomes invisible to software, bots, Internet providers, hackers, and even websites. That means you are safe when you browse online when you turn on your VPN.

Now, most VPNs are available to almost any connected device and not just on computers and laptops. However, VPN platforms may not work similarly when you are using a Chromebook device. Still, top VPN providers like Surfshark and NordVPN work well with Chromebooks. You have two ways to set up a VPN service – via Google Play Store or as a browser extension.

How to Download, Install & Use a VPN Service on your Chromebook Computer

If your Chromebook computer has a Google Play Store, you can install a VPN service as an Android app on Chrome OS. Fortunately, many VPN services have an Android app version for mobile devices. If you cannot access Google Play Store, a good way to set up a VPN on your Chromebook is by adding it as a browser extension.

Method #1 – Installing an Android VPN App on Chromebook via Google Play Store

Before you start downloading and installing a VPN service app on your Chromebook, you need to research first on a reliable VPN brand. Here are some of the best options today’s market has to offer:

Once you selected the VPN service you want to use, launch Google Play Store. On the Search box, enter the name of your selected VPN. Hit the Install button.

To use the VPN service as an Android app, all you have to do is launch the VPN app after installing. Sign up for an account and choose your desired location. Then, hit the Connect button.

Method #2 – Add VPN as a Browser Extension on Chromebook

  • First, open the Chrome browser.
  • Go to https://chrome.google.com/webstore.
  • Enter the name of the VPN service that you want to use.
  • Click the Add to Chrome button.
  • Select Add Extension.

To set up and use the VPN service as a browser extension, go to the upper right corner of your Chrome browser. Click the Puzzle icon and select your VPN service.
