Fix Google Docs Spell Check Not Underlining Spelling Errors or Misspelled Words

Solution #1 – Restart Your Web Browser

A quick restart of the web browser you are using will help refresh the tools and functions in Google Docs. If it does not work, move on to the next solution.

Solution #2 – Check If You Have Enabled the Spelling Check Tool

You may have accidentally turned off the Spell Check tool on your Google Docs settings. Double check and enable the feature when necessary.

  • Open the document that you want to edit on Google Docs.
  • Click the Tools tab.
  • Go to Spelling and grammar.
  • See if the options Show Spelling Suggestions and Show Grammar Suggestions have checkmarks.

Solution #3 – Set Google Docs Language to Use

The spelling checker might be having hard time determining misspelled words if the default language to use is not set properly. To do it, follow these steps:

  • Click the File tab on the Google Docs menu.
  • Select Language.
  • Now, click the language that you want to set for your document.
  • You can check if the spell check tool works.

Solution #4 – Delete Other Languages in Your Browser

  • On your browser, click the More button.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Look for the Use Spell Check For.

Solution #6 – Clear Your Browser’s Cache and Data

  • On your browser, go to the More option or the Menu.
  • Click History.
  • Go to Clear Browsing Data.
  • Set the time range to All Time.
  • Make sure to check the boxes next to browsing data, cache, and cookies.
  • Click Clear Data

Solution #7 – Copy and Paste to Another Document

  • On your document, copy all the text.
  • Open a new document on Google Docs.
  • Now, paste the text and check if the Spell Check tool works.

Solution #8 – Update Your Browser
