Creating documents either for work or personal use require different formatting. You may need to add a text that requires subscript or superscript format such as mathematical formulas, footnotes, or references.

If you want to add subscripts and superscripts in your Google Docs document, check out the procedures below.

Adding a Subscript Text Format in Google Docs

Inserting a subscript format in Google Docs is straightforward and easy. Just follow the steps below.

  • Open the document with the text that you are converting as a subscript.
  • Highlight the text.
  • Click Format on the menu bar.
  • Select Text.
  • Click Subscript. It will convert your highlighted text to subscript. To undo, highlight the subscript text first and follow the same procedure.

Using the Special Characters to Add a Subscript

Another way to add a subscript in your Google Docs document is to use the Special Characters option.

  • On the menu bar, click Insert.
  • Select Special Characters.
  • Type subscripts in the search bar.
  • A list of subscripts characters will appear in the result and you can choose what you want for your document.
  • Click Insert when you are done.

  • Open the document with the text you want to convert as superscript.
  • Highlight the text.
  • On the menu bar, click Format.
  • Click Text and select Superscript. It will then convert the highlights text to superscript. To undo, follow the same procedure but only highlighting the superscript text this time.

Using the Special Characters to Add a Superscript

Just like the subscripts, you can also use the Special Characters option to add subscripts to your documents in Google Docs.

  • On the menu bar, click Insert.
  • Select Special Characters.
  • Type superscripts in the search bar.
  • A list of superscript characters will appear in the result and you can choose what you want for your document.
  • Click Insert when you are done.

Keyboard Shortcuts for Adding Subscript or Superscript Text Format in Google Docs

There are keyboard shortcuts you can use to easily add subscripts and superscripts into your document without going through the processes above.

In Google Docs, you can press “Ctrl +,” on your keyboard for the subscript shortcut and “Ctrl +.” for the superscript shortcut.
