How to Remove Hardcoded Subtitles from Video Files on VLC?

If you are looking for a way on how to remove hardcoded subtitles from a video file using VLC, you are not alone. Many people are quite annoyed by the subtext they see when playing a movie. Although subtitles are helpful, some of them are irrelevant when you do not understand the language.

But, did you know that there are two different kinds of subtitles? There are the hardcoded subtitles and the soft subtitles.

Difference Between Hardcoded Subtitles and Soft Subtitles

Soft subtitles are not embedded into the video file. These subtitles are additional files added to the video folder, with the usual extension. It is easy to turn it on or off and often there are different subtitles of a video with different languages. You can find these subtitles on a DVD or Blu-ray.

On the other hand, hardcoded subtitles are integrated into the video file. It is embedded to the picture and often found in foreign movies.

The answer is unfortunately no. Hardcore subtitles cannot be removed from the video. Doing so will take a lot of editing and other technical process, which will compromise the overall quality of the picture in the end. The video itself does not have a separate .srt file in the folder unlike the soft subtitles so you cannot just delete the subtitle file.

However, when you encounter a soft subtitle, your an easily disable it in your VLC.

How To Completely Disable Subtitles in VLC

  • In your VLC player, go to VLC Preferences.
  • At the bottom, click All.
  • Next, look for Video at the left side and click to open.
  • Select Subtitles/OSD.
  • Uncheck the Autodetect subtitle files.
  • Uncheck Enable sub-pictures.
  • lastly, uncheck On Screen Display.

Another way is to right click on the video screen.

  • Next, click Video.
  • Select Subtitles Track
  • Click Disable.

  1. Does not remove hardcoded subtitles, they are cropped out changing the size of the video. Depending on location of subtitle, might be watchable or not.
