How to Send Direct Messages and Make Calls in Slack

Sending direct or private messages and making calls are possible in Slack. The instant messaging system built right within Slack is similar to popular apps like Zoom and Skype. You can collaborate with other people and communicate with your team members in one group channel.

How Does Slack Works

Users can find channels on their Slack account that allows them to divide and organize group chats based on their preference. Team members can join the groups for collaboration while also having the option to leave the chat group.

Slack also offers audio and video calls as well as direct messaging. There is also a screen sharing feature and file sharing of images, videos, and PDF files.

Signing in to the app will give you access to their Slack App Directory, where you can find more than 2,000 apps integrated to Slack. This will give users more efficiency since they can access apps like Google Drive, Dropbox, Outlook, Trello, Workday, RingCentral, and many more.

Using your Desktop

  • If you want to call through a direct message, first open the message.
  • On the top right corner, click the Phone icon to start the call. You can also turn on the Camera icon for video calls.
  • If you want to call through a channel, open the channel.
  • Click Details on the upper right corner.
  • Click the Phone icon.
  • Select Start Call to confirm

Using your iOS/Android device

  • First go to the channel or direct message.
  • Tap the Start a Call icon
  • Select the name of the person you want to call.
  • Tap Start.

How to Send Private Messages in Slack

  • To send a direct message, go to the upper left corner and click the Compose button.
  • Search for the person you want to send a private message to.
  • Type your message.

How to Access Your Direct Messages

Using your Desktop

  • On the left side of the screen, click the direct message you want to open. You can also use the shortcuts, Command, Shift, K for Mac and Ctrl, Shift, K for Windows.

Using your iOS/Android device

  • To view your direct messages in the sidebar, simply swipe right and the direct messages will open. You can also swipe left to open recent direct messages.
  • Then, tap the Jump to button and type the name of the person.
