The Failed to Obtain IP Address error message means there is a problem in assigning an IP address to your device while connecting via WiFi. It can be a configuration failure on your WiFi Extender or wireless router that causes the problem. Fortunately, there are ways to troubleshoot and resolve this wireless network connectivity issue.

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Failed to Obtain IP Address WiFi Error on Android Phones or Tablets

You can find below several solutions that will help you troubleshoot the IP address issue when connecting to WiFi Internet network on your Android phone or tablet. Try to follow each step one at a time and check if it resolves the wireless Internet problem on your mobile device or not.

Method #1 – Turn Off and On your WiFi

  • Open the Settings menu of your Android device.
  • Go to Connections, Wireless & networks, Connectivity, or Networks.
  • Select WiFi.
  • Tap your WiFi network.
  • Select Forget network.
  • Tap the WiFi network again after a few seconds and reconnect.

Method #2 – Power Cycle your Devices

  • Exit all running apps on your Android device and turn it off.
  • Unplug your router and modem.
  • Wait for at least 3 minutes before plugging in your router and modem.
  • Restart your Android device and reconnect to your WiFi network.

Method #3 – Clear Cache on your Google Play Services

  • Launch the Settings menu of your Android device.
  • Navigate to Apps.
  • Look for Google Play Services.
  • Open the Storage section.
  • Tap Clear Cache.

Method #4 – Assign a Different Name to your Android Device

  • On the Settings menu, tap About Phone.
  • Select Device name.
  • Rename your Android device and tap OK.
  • Reconnect to your WiFi network.

Method #5 – Reset the Network Settings on your Android Device

  • Open the Settings menu.
  • Go to System.
  • Select Reset options.
  • Choose Reset WiFi, mobile & Bluetooth.
  • Tap Reset Settings.
  • Reconnect to your WiFi network.

Method #6 – Create a Static IP Address on Android

  • On the Settings menu, navigate to WiFi and Network.
  • Select WiFi.
  • Tap your WiFi network.
  • On the upper right corner, tap the pencil icon.
  • Tap the Advanced options.
  • Navigate to the IP Settings.
  • Select Static.
  • In the IP address, enter 192.168.1.20.
  • Under Gateway, enter your IP address.
  • Go to DNS 1 and enter 8.8.8.8.
  • Navigate to DNS 2 and enter 8.8.4.4.
  • Tap Save.
