How to Fix ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED Error Message on Google Chrome Web Browser

There are several things you can do to get rid of the error and continue with your browsing. Follow each of the troubleshooting methods we’ve listed below so you’ll be fixing the ‘ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED’ error in no time.

Clear your Browsing Data on Chrome

This Google Chrome error is sometimes the result of corrupted or outdated cookie files and cached error pages in the browser’s cache. To clear the data, simply follow these steps:

  1. Launch Google Chrome web browser on your PC, Chromebook or Mac. 
  2. Click the three-dots menu icon. 
  3. Hover the mouse over More tools and then click Clear browsing data.
  4. Choose All Time in the Time Range option on the next screen. 
  5. Check Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, and Cached images and files. 
  6. Click Clear data. 

Open the webpage again after doing the steps to check if you still get the error. 

Reset Netsh Winsock 

Another effective way of fixing ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED error on Google Chrome is to reset Netsh Winsock. You need to use the Command Prompt and follow these steps:

  1. Launch Run window by pressing Win + R together. Type cmd into the box and then press Shift + Ctrl + Enter. A window will pop up asking if you want to allow the app to make changes. Click Yes to continue to run the Command Prompt as administrator. 
  2. Input the command below one by one in the Command Prompt window. Don’t forget to press Enter after every command. 
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /all
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
netsh int ip set dns
netsh winsock reset

Open the webpage again to check if the error is gone.

Change Your DNS Address Settings

Changing your DNS address is another way to fix Google Chrome’s ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED error. Your internet service provider blocks specific websites based on its terms and service policy, which means you won’t be able to access them. If this is the case, you can change your DNS address to something that Google provides itself. 

  1. Right-click on the Network icon found on the bottom-right portion of the taskbar.
  2. Click Open Network & Internet Settings.
  3. Choose Change adapter options on the next window that pops up. 
  4. Right-click the network adapter and choose Properties.
  5. Look for Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), highlight this, and then click Properties.
  6. Click on the box labeled “Use the following DNS Server addresses.” 
  7. Type 8.8.8.8 in the box for Preferred DNS Server and 8.8.4.4 in the box for Alternate DNS Server.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close all the windows and open Google Chrome again to check if it fixes the problem.

Reset Google Chrome

Sometimes, resetting your Google Chrome might get rid of the error.

  1. Launch Google Chrome.
  2. Type in chrome://flags/ in the Omnibox and hit the Enter key.
  3. Choose Reset all.
  4. Click Relaunch.
