Here are some issues that may contribute to the run-time error 1004 in Microsoft Excel.
- There may be more legend entries on the chart.
- The Microsoft Excel desktop icon may be corrupted.
- The range values in the chart are not properly set.
- There may be programs running the background that conflict with the file.
Fixing Run-time Error 1004 in Microsoft Excel
Solution #1 – Create a New Workbook
- Open MS Excel.
- Press CTRL+N to open a new workbook, or you can select Blank Workbook.
- Delete all the sheets in the workbook, leaving Sheet 1 behind.
- Now, try to format the workbook the way you want it. You can add charts of templates.
- Once done, save your work by clicking File and selecting Save As.
- Enter your file name.
- Under Save as type, select Excel Template (.xlt) or Excel Template (.xltx), depending on the version you are using.
- Click Save.
- Now, you can insert this template using the code: Sheets.Add Type:=path\filename. Just change the filename to the actual filename you saved the document.
Solution #2 – Uninstall Microsoft Works
- Open the Task Manager. You can search it, or you can press the CTRL + ALT + DEL buttons together.
- Stop all the programs that are running.
- Go to Programs and Features by launching the Run dialog box and typing appwiz.cpl. In some cases, you will have to go to Start and open the Control Panel. From there, click Add or remove program.
- Look for Microsoft Works and click Uninstall.
Solution #3 – Remove the GWXL97.XLA File
- Open the File Explorer by pressing Windows key + E.
- Navigate to this file: C:Usersuser nameAppDataLocalMicrosoftExcel.
- Next, look for the XLStart folder and click to open.
- Look for the GWXL97.XLA file and delete it.
