How to Use Two-Way Video Calling on Amazon Fire TV Cube

Amazon Fire TV Cube creates a convenient solution for users to accomplish the task they need to do with less effort. It does the work for you while you bark commands. You can ask the Fire TV Cube to launch apps, play music, search for movies, notify you with calls, or search for answers for you.

Now, Amazon announced a new feature that will take your Fire TV Cube experience up a notch. With the two-way video calling via Alexa, you can make and receive video calls using your Fire TV Cube.

How Does the Amazon Fire TV Cube Two-Way Video Calling Work?

Users can send a command on their Fire TV Cube to make or receive video calls from their TV to any Alexa device. The other party must have an Alexa device with a screen for the call to come through. Examples of devices with a screen are the Echo Show, another Fire TV Cube, or a smartphone or tablet with the Alexa app. The video calling feature is available for all 2nd Generation Fire TV Cube devices.

How to Set up Alexa Two-Way Video Calls on Amazon Fire TV Cube

Before you can use the two-way video calling feature, you must have additional devices aside from your 2nd generation Fire TV Cube.

First is the third-party webcams that have a UVC support at least 720p resolution and 30fps. It must have a field view of 6 to 10 feet. To maximize the experience, use a webcam with 1080p resolution and 60 to 90 degree FOV. Amazon discourages the use of 4K webcams and a field view of 12 feet.

You will also need to have a Micro USB to USB Adapter. Use it to connect your webcam to your Fire TV Cube and not the Ethernet adapter that goes with it.

  1. To get started, register and set up your Fire TV Cube. Connect your webcam and adapter.
  2. To enable calling, launch the Amazon Alexa app on your phone.
  3. Go to the Devices tab.
  4. Look for the Fire TV Cube.
  5. Go to Communications and set it to Enabled.
  6. Look for the Drop In for your Fire TV Cube and set it to Enabled.
  7. To import your contacts, go to the Communications tab.
  8. On the upper right corner, tap the person icon.
  9. Tap the three-dotted icon.
  10. Select Import Contacts.

Placing a Video Call on Amazon Fire TV Cube

You can make a call by barking a command like “Alexa, call this person’s Fire TV Cube.” To turn on the video, say “Alexa, video on.” To answer an incoming call, say “Alexa, answer.” To end the call, say “Alexa, end call.”
